Description
The gonorrhea test is a urine test that screens for the infection.
Cause:
The cause of gonorrhea is the neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria. The infection is spread through vaginal, oral or anal sexual contact.
-Men have a 20% chance of getting the infection from having sexual relations with an infected women -Women have a 50% chance of getting the infection from having sexual relations with an infected man
Symptoms of Gonorrhea:
Gonorrhea symptoms may appear within two to ten days after exposure to an infected person. For women, the symptoms may take up to three weeks to appear.
Women: -No symptoms 30-40% of the time -Gonorrhea may cause pelvic inflammatory disease, which may lead to infertility -Infection and irritation of the cervix -Need to urinate often -Itching and burning of the vagina, usually with a thick yellow/green discharge
Men: -Pain and burning during urination -Thick yellow penile discharge 50% of the time -Inflammation of infection of the prostate and/or the duct in the testicles
Complications:
-Pelvic inflammatory disease in 20-40% of the women -Chronic pelvic pain and sterility -Arthritis -Meningitis (inflammation of the brain) -Endocarditis (infection of the heart) (1%)
